Gallery: Artists explore the state of our planet

Date October 14, 2008

Images like the one on the right were submitted to the 10th International Digital Print Exhibition, organised by Art and Science Collaborations, Inc. (ASCI).

Moth Generator by Christine Chin. In theory, moths could be magnetised (using a high-iron diet) and polarised. By then making them fly backwards and forwards (using light) past conductive coils, an electric current could be generated. The idea is, of course, fictional - but Chin hopes to encourage creative thought about the future of energy production.

The images are intended to encourage imaginative solutions to environmental problems, and to make people reflect on their role in changing the planet.

They are on display at the New York Hall of Science until January 25, 2009, and include pictures of electricity-generating moths and polar bears with jet packs.
